I was debating between this lightbox and the Artograph lightpads and went with this one. Even though this one was more expensive, it was lighter, and it may seem like a minor difference, but I'm always for things that weigh even the slightest bit less. It's also just a really pretty, streamlined design, which I am a fan of. For being all plastic, it feels pretty sturdy, thought not indestructible. I can't exactly say the same for the feet that are supposed to prop it up. They seem a bit wobbly, but I never use them anyway.As far as how it functions, I kind of had mixed feelings when I first opened it. Even though I haven't actually used an Artograph lightpad, based on other people's reviews and videos, it seems super bright. I was expecting this one to be super bright too and radiate extreme light, making watercolor paper look like tracing paper. Soooo I was a little disappointed because it really isn't super duper bright bright. The light is very even though.That said, it works perfectly. I usually draw with pencil on sketch paper and use a 140lb watercolor paper over, and I have no problem seeing the lines. I draw with medium-dark pressure though, so if you're a really light drawer, it might be a little harder to see your under drawing. Two sheets of 140lb watercolor paper most likely won't work unless you use a fat black marker for your initial art. Also, even though I was initially a little disappointed by the brightness, I realized that I'm staring into the light and attempting to focus on a smooth brush drawing at the same time, and if the light was any brighter, my eyes would probably start to twitch and lose focus. So the part that I wasn't too keen on to begin with ended up being a plus.Additionally, one of the main reason I went with this lightbox was because of the rounded edges and the completely smooth top surface. I have a tendency to accidentally crease paper on edges, and this eliminates that worry. The completely flat top surface is nice because the corners of your paper don't get bruised from jamming into a little raised surface, and your hand doesn't get stuck anywhere. This last point is pretty crucial for me because I ink with India ink and a brush, so I need a clear path to steadily move my arm when inking.Brief summary: If you use really thick paper or just want extreme clarity when tracing, I'd probably go with a brighter box. If you are working for a long time in the dark or have a tendency to accidentally destroy your paper/be annoyed by little things like your paper corners or hand hitting obstructions, I'd go for this thing.Side note, the power cord is on the short side. It is just long enough to go from lightbox on desk to outlet directly behind desk.
